Supporting new models of public participation will help Indonesia emerge as an exemplar of how to promote tolerance, social equity and environmental sustainability.

The Regional Context

Indonesia has made remarkable progress in its transition from military rule to a thriving democracy. This reform process has given rise to decentralized governance, direct elections, laws that address the needs of the poor and underrepresented, strong civil society groups, and new platforms for public debate.

Despite these successes, state policy and program reforms have yet to address deepening poverty and persistent discrimination toward marginalized social groups. Indonesia is also experiencing increased environmental degradation and is the world's third-largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

Our Goal

The goal of our work is to create economic opportunity and offer increased access and participation in local governance for poor and socially marginalized communities.

Empowering marginalized groups by helping them to gain a stronger voice and a greater say in local decision making is essential to breaking old patterns of social exclusion and new patterns of economic disparity.

These priorities also include guaranteeing the realization of basic rights for all citizens across the diverse geography and culture of the Indonesian archipelago.

2. GEF SGP UNDP

Established in 1992, the year of the Rio Earth Summit, the GEF Small Grants Programme embodies the very essence of sustainable development by "thinking globally acting locally". By providing financial and technical support to projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing people's well-being and livelihoods, SGP demonstrates that community action can maintain the fine balance between human needs and environmental imperatives.

SGP recognizes that environmental degradation such as the destruction of ecosystems and the species that depend upon them, increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, pollution of international waters, land degradation and the spread of persistent organic pollutants are life-threatening challenges that endanger us all. However, poor and vulnerable communities –SGP's primary stakeholders- are most at risk because they depend on access to natural resources for their livelihoods and often live in fragile ecosystems.

The programme provides grants of up to $50,000 directly to local communities including indigenous people, community-based organizations and other non-governmental groups for projects in Biodiversity, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management, International Waters and Chemicals.

3. Hivos Rosea

Hivos is an international organisation that seeks new solutions to persistent global issues. With smart projects in the right places, we oppose discrimination, inequality, abuse of power and the unsustainable use of our planet’s resources. Counterbalance alone, however, is not enough. Our primary focus is achieving structural change. This is why we cooperate with innovative businesses, citizens and their organisations. We share a dream with them of sustainable economies and inclusive societies.

We believe that every human being has the right to live in freedom and dignity. You can be who you are, whether you are male, female, gay, straight, or anything in between. Moreover, you should have the freedom to believe and say what you want, to challenge governments and stir up the established order. Your freedom only ends where another person’s freedom begins, and of course where the earth imposes her limits. The depletion of natural resources, loss of biodiversity and climate change already have major implications for the most vulnerable inhabitants of our planet. They, and future generations, are entitled to a truly sustainable world.

The problems Hivos wants to confront are complex and can change rapidly. Against a background of structural poverty, climate change and repression, we see economic crises, rising food prices and growing inequality. There are no simple or quick fixes. For real change to take place, we need to foster smart thinking and innovative solutions. Courage, creativity and knowledge are required to build a green and open world.

We cooperate with various partners across four continents. These can be artists, lawyers, or hackers, but also governments, energy companies and knowledge institutions. The projects we develop and support can be large-scale and long-term, but also small and experimental – a farmers cooperative, or a breeding ground for Internet entrepreneurs, for example. They can also be in the form of a campaign against corruption, a partnership with a coffee trader or a safe haven for a gay activist. What our partners have in common is that they seek to bring about social change through innovative ways. We recognise that same drive in many people across the world.

This project is to utilize farming wastes to improve smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and promote sustainable agriculture practice. Wastes like corn cobs and stalks, cocoa husks, paddy straws are fermented to be cattle feed while the dung of the cattle is for cooking fuels, lighting and fertilizer.

This project will contribute to a Nutrients for all by utilizing something considered problems. Farming wastes are formulated to be cattle feed since feed covers 70% of cow breeding/fattening costs therefore more cows raised with less resources required. When processed to be fertilizers through biogas, Cow dung will generate extra income, improve farming productivity about 15 – 20%, reduce at least half cost for chemicals, and promote healthy, natural ecosystems. Furthermore, biogas is able to reduce cooking fuel cost at least 80% and lighting cost up to 30%. This model will also make smallholder farming more bankable since reducing potential for non performing loan.
